12th Annual Grandparents Conference
Saturday, May 9th, 2015
Our annual Grandparents Conference was held on Saturday May 9, 2015 from 8 am to 1 pm at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Plymouth with 38 grandparents in attendance.
The morning presentation was an overview of Music Therapy presented by Kay Luedtke-Smith of Do Re Me Therapy. Luedke-Smith used musical instruments, books and visual aids to demonstrate musical therapy technique. She was able to share delightful stories of the ways children have benefitted from musical therapy services.
After lunch, Senator John Hoffman provided updates on two key pieces of legislation which had the support of DSAM: the Achieving a Better Life Experience Act (The ABLE Act) and the Prenatal Trisomy Diagnosis Awareness Act.
We are happy to report that The Prenatal Trisomy Diagnosis Act was passed by the Minnesota legislature and signed into law by Governor Mark Dayton on May 15, 2015. This bill requires health care practitioners who perform genetic tests on pregnant women for Patua syndrome, Edwards syndrome, or Down syndrome, to provide information to the women if the results are positive.
Stay tuned for information on the 2016 Grandparents Conference.
