Three Great Reasons to Take a Walk In Como Park on Sunday September 27.
ONE – It’s All About Down syndrome.
The 18th Annual Step Up For Down Syndrome Walk is all about your family member or friend with Down syndrome. It’s about all he or she has accomplished with your support and the help of our community.
It’s about telling the world about that.
And about heartfelt celebration for every last minute of it.
Come to Como Park on Walk Sunday. It’ll be nothing but smiles, promise.
TWO – It’s All About Your Support.
Important fact: The Step Up For Down Syndrome Walk raises almost half of what’s needed to operate the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota. That’s about $200,000 from sponsors, friends and families, through matching contributions from employers. And the very sweet donations of lunch money and allowances we most always get.
Your Association, in turn, applies that money to direct services ranging from consultation with new and expectant parents, about a half dozen major conferences, our annual bike camp, maintenance of our lending library, website and other information-rich resources and, not the least, bringing the world’s experts on key issues affecting people with Down syndrome and their families to Minnesota. In just this past year that’s included behavior expert Dr. Dennis McGuire and Dr. Sue Buckley of DownsEd International for her uniquely effective Reading and Language Intervention now being deployed across Minnesota.
Your fundraising dollars also go towards new and expectant parent programs, including the Down Comforter Packet, informational packets provided to hospitals and clinics across the region at no cost, new parent breakfasts and support for the parent groups across the state. Please visit our website, www.dsamn.org to learn more.
It is what we do. It’s terribly important and we need your help so we can continue to do it. Please go to www.dsamn.org to learn how you can help.
THREE – It’s A Whole Lot of Fun.
Best reason to join us on September 27: the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota Step Up For Down Syndrome Walk is fun.
It’s way more than a Walk. It’s a full day of entertainment that includes live music, face painting, bounce houses, slides, food, hamster balls, Disney princesses, super heroes, pony rides. And, it’s all available in beautiful Como Park, the crown jewel of the St Paul parks system, recently named the best urban park system in America (a title it shares with The Minneapolis Park system where we meet for the Association summer picnic).
Invite your friends and family to join you for a great day. Bring a tent and grill. Do burgers and brats. Maybe even some late season sweet corn. Or just come and stroll around. Greet folks who are every bit as proud of you and people with Down syndrome as you are.

The Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk is the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota’s single most important source of financial support. Thanks to what you and thousands like you did last year, we raised more than $200,000 to support Association activities, such as our Regional Conference, Grandparents and Youth & Adult Conferences, financial support to more than 20 parent groups, new and expectant parent packets, books and videos for new and expectant parents and more.
Online fundraising is easy! Just go to www.ds-stride.org/stepupmn, after you register for the walk, proceed to your fundraising page. You can create a personal page OR a team page. You can include a personal message, an optional photo or video, personalized web address and message to and about your friends and family.
FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT
Everyone that registers by September 22nd will be guaranteed a lunch for the number indicated on their registration. When you check in the day of the walk (at the registration area), you will be given tickets for your lunch. There is no charge for these bag lunches nor is there a charge for the gluten free lunches you need to order. If you register after September 22nd or prefer not to order a bag lunch or just walk up the day of, we will have food that can be purchased from vendors who will be with us all day, including: mini donuts, bratwurst, hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, and more.
There will be face painting, moon walks, kids’ games and lots more! Plus, Step Up Walk entertainment has become a huge part of the day. This year our main stage will again feature the indie kids rock group The Bazillions.
SELF ADVOCATE PROJECT
Please bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Ronald McDonald House or an item for Fiona’s Hope Totes. Many DSAM families have benefited from the services of these organizations and we’d like to give back. Ronald McDonald House provides comfortable, home away from homes for families of children in extended hospital stays. Fiona’s Hope Totes provides bags to families who have extended hospital stays to make life a little more comfortable.
