Hey folks, we have been doing this for a long time. Celebrating that is. For 17 years we’ve gathered, rain or shine, heat or cold, boom or bust to celebrate all that our family members and friends with Down syndrome have accomplished and all of the love and labor we have invested to help them. Celebrate! What was once just a nice idea is an event and that event is now a tradition – and what a tradition!
The largest walk held annually in St. Paul Como Park - close to 8,000 happy people! Our own tent city. Live music. Marching bands. Clowns, face painting, slides and moon walks. Hamster balls. And, of course, there’s food. Bag lunches are provided with registration and plenty of food vendors with items for purchase. Or, bring your own food.
If you haven’t done it for the past 17 years, maybe it’s time you joined us for the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk, Sunday September 28th, Midway Park Pavilion, Como Park, St. Paul with registration starting at 10:30 AM. Walk starts at noon; lunch served at 1:00. On September 28th we’ll celebrate the accomplishments of our friends and family members with Down syndrome AND raise awareness of Down syndrome in our community. For the past 17 years that has meant a fun-filled day like no other, but topping our amazing Step Up Walk record is really up to you. Bring your family, friends, neighbors, classmates together for a fun and festivities filled day!

The Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk is the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota’s single most important source of financial support. Thanks to what you and thousands like you did last year, we raised more than $200,000 to support Association activities, such as our Regional Conference, Grandparents and Youth & Adult Conferences, financial support to more than 20 parent groups, new and expectant parent packets, books and gifts for new and expectant parents and more.
To show our deep appreciation, if you raise $5,000 or more for the Association your name will be entered into a drawing for a brand new iPad. The drawing for the iPad will be held just prior to the start of the 2014 St. Paul Walk. All donations are tax deductible. If your donor’s employer has a matching grant program, that can double their gift.
Online fundraising is easy! If you visit our Step Up for Down Syndrome Page – www.dsamn.org/stepup – you can follow the links to create a personal fundraising page in less than 5 minutes and start fund raising right away. It’s free and you can include a personal message, an optional photo or video, personalized web address and message to and about your friends and family.
Registration is $15 for your team/family. This covers bag lunches and all of the family activities provided at the park. You may register by going to dsamn.donorpages.com/StepUpWalk2014 and following the links to register or by downloading the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk Brochure (.pdf) and mailing in your registration into the DSAM office.

FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT
On the day of the walk (at the registration area), you will be given tickets for your lunch, if you requested lunches on your registration. There is no charge for these bag lunches nor is there a charge for the gluten-free lunches you need to order. If you register after September 22nd or prefer not to order a bag lunch or just walk up the day of, we will have food that can be purchased from vendors who will be with us all day, including: cheese curds, bratwurst, hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, and more. Additionally, Step Up Walk entertainment has become a huge part of the day. This year our main stage will again feature the kindie-rock group The Bazillions, plus an ensemble from the Center for Irish Music. Returning this year will be the Home Depot tent where kids can make any number of crafts to take home and Twin Cities Music Therapy Services will be hosting a music exploration area. And don’t miss the New Parent Welcome tent hosted by Minnetonka Pediatric Therapy.
WIN AN IPAD
To show our deep appreciation, all who raise $5,000 or more on behalf of the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota will have their names along with those who raise the same amount or more entered into a drawing for an Apple iPad. All you have to do is have your donations recorded on your fundraising page OR turn your pledge sheet into the Down Syndrome Association offices by September 22. Donations received after that date, while deeply appreciated, will not be counted toward the drawing minimum.
SELF ADVOCATE PROJECT
Fiona’s Hope Totes
Fiona’s Hope Totes are tote bag care packages for families that are experiencing an unexpectedly extended hospital stay with their sick child. Fiona’s story of hope and courage has touched one of our self advocates and he approached the committee about collecting donations for Fiona’s Hope Totes. We hope that you will help our self advocates fill some Hope Totes for families in need of a little hope and courage. Some items needed include personal care items such as shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, activities like magazines, crossword puzzle books or gift cards to restaurants that deliver. A full list of items needed and to find out more about Fiona’s Hope Totes, please visit www.fionashope.com.
The Self-Advocate committee is once again holding a food drive. Committee members will be gathering your food donations at the Walk and then delivering them to Ronald McDonald House. A list of items needed can be found by visiting: rmhtwincities.org/how-to-help/our-wish-list If you have questions please call the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota office at (651) 603-0720 or (800) 511-3696. Or email Stepup@dsamn.org. We look forward to seeing you at Como Park on September 28th as we celebrate our 17th Annual Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk!
